Why You Need a Smart Thermostat

Fall is an excellent time to consider installing smart thermostat. As the weather shifts from summer heat to the winter chill, Western Pennsylvania tends to experience temperature swings on a daily basis. It’s chilly first thing in the morning and then it gets anywhere from warm to outright hot in the afternoon. By the time the sun goes down, which is getting earlier and earlier each day now, the temperature drops yet again. All of this can make it tricky to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors, as well. We may even find that we’re using both the furnace and the air conditioning in a single day!

Smart thermostats help manage the temperature swings, plus they save you money and protect the environment by using less energy! If that’s not enough to persuade you, they also simplify your life because they “learn” your family’s preferences and your schedule. Whether you use Apple HomeKit™, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home, smart thermostats, such as the iComfort® S30 ultra smart thermostat from Lennox help you manage your home temperature, whether you’re home or away.

Considering the many benefits of smart thermostats, we’re not surprised that we’re getting more and more requests from homeowners to integrate them into their homes. In fact, according to IoT Business, most homes will have a smart thermostat by 2024.

Basic Commands

When you’re at home and want to adjust your indoor climate, you simply say the words to your smart device and your smart thermostat instantly fine-tunes your comfort. Here are some examples of commands your smart thermostat responds to:

  • “Hey Siri, set the thermostat to 72 degrees.”
  • “Hey Alexa, raise the temperature by two degrees.”
  • “OK Google, lower the temperature in the living room.”

And of course, each of the commands above with work with whichever smart home device you prefer, but here’s a video you can watch to see just how easy it is to use Google Assistant to control iComfort® products.

Automatic Adjustments Using IFTTT (If This, Then That)

A free, web-based service, If This, Then That (IFTTT) integrates apps and devices, getting them to work together. Integrating your smart home device and thermostat allows you to program your thermostat to set the temperature based upon your routine, location and weather. Using IFTTT, you link conditional statements called “applets,” which are triggered by changes that occur in other webservices, such as gmail, Facebook, and smart home devices. But don’t worry, the IFTTT site has built the relevant commands for you, so it’s mostly a matter of picking the conditions you prefer. In addition, IFTTT manages multiple devices with a single command.

Here are some examples of IFTTT applets that work with smart thermostats:

  • “If I leave for work, then set the temperature to 78 degrees.”
  • “If the temperature outside drops to 50 degrees, then turn on the heat.”
  • “If someone changes the temperature, then tell me.”

(That last one is particularly helpful if you have teenagers!)

To learn how it all works, check out this video on how to connect your devices to IFTTT and explore the Lennox IFTTT resource page for triggers and actions. It’s super simple to set up and use! Plus, if you have other items in your home, such as lights or your coffee pot, you can set up automatic IFTTT actions for those, as well.

Embrace the Feels Like™ Feature

You know how, in the winter, your weather app tells you it’s 20° but the “feels like” temperature is 12° because of the wind chill? Or how 70° weather can feel like 80° degrees due to high humidity? Well, your indoor environment can be similarly affected by factors other than the temperature!

Whether your ideal indoor temperature is a cozy 77° or an energy-saving 68°, create your perfect air using the iComfort® S30’s Feels Like™ feature. It factors in your home’s humidity levels, so the temperature you set is how your home actually feels for perfect comfort all the time.

Use Your Preferred Smart Platform

Is Amazon Alexa your jam? Or do you prefer Siri through your phone? Perhaps pairing your smart thermostat with your iPad, Apple TV or Apple HomePod would make the perfect integration? Smart thermostats work with any of these platforms so you can stick with the platform your family already knows and likes.  Lennox’ iComfort® thermostats easily work with each person’s life. There are multiple ways to use the system and many options to manage your devices with the smart platform you choose.

Connected and Controlled Comfort

Did you know that thermostats go back as far as the 1620s when Dutch innovator Cornelius Drebbel invented a mercury-based device to regulate the temperature in a chicken incubator? Modern thermostats were introduced in the 1800s, first for industry and later for homes. Since then – at least until very recently – thermostats were set-it-and-forget-it devices. Changing the temperature required manually changing the thermostat, and there were no robust, customization options. But not anymore!

Powerful control over your comfort is now at your command – literally! – with Lennox’ line of iComfort® smart thermostats. Make your home environment exactly how you like it by simply speaking the words. It’s almost as good as a genie in a bottle!

Plus, you can even control your home’s indoor environment when you’re out and about. The iComfort App allows you to monitor temperatures and schedules right from your phone or tablet while you’re on the go. Getting back from vacation a day early – or better yet, a day late? Tell your thermostat exactly when to turn the air conditioning back to your desired temp and return to a comfortable home.

Rethink Your Desires

Your home is your castle. Don’t you want it to always be comfortable and welcoming to your family and all those who enter? These days, doing that is as simple as can be. Rethinking your indoor air is about realizing that you shouldn’t be uncomfortable in your own home.
